Questions people ask

Is grief counselling free in Canada?
Some of it is. Hospice bereavement programs, the 988 crisis line, MyGrief.ca’s courses and many peer support groups are free. Private counsellors and psychologists charge, and coverage varies by province and by workplace benefits — check an employee assistance plan if you have one.
Who do I call if I cannot cope right now?
Call or text 988, Canada’s Suicide Crisis Helpline. It is free, confidential and open every hour of every day, and you do not need to be in danger to call — it is for anyone in emotional distress.
When should I look for grief support?
There is no wrong time. Many people reach out weeks or months after a death, when the practical tasks are done and the people around them have gone back to normal. If grief is stopping you from working, eating or sleeping, or has not shifted at all after several months, that is a reason to talk to someone.
Is there grief support in Chinese?
Our Chinese funeral services page lists Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking providers and community organisations. 988 also offers service in languages other than English and French through interpretation.
How do I find a bereavement group near me?
Start with the hospice or palliative-care society closest to you — the CHPCA directory lists them — and with AboutGrief.ca’s regional listings. We list 14 local grief-support providers across 6 provinces below, and are adding more.
