Cremation in Canada
Direct cremation — no ceremony, just the cremation and paperwork — typically costs $1,200–$3,000 in Canada. Adding a visitation or memorial service brings it to roughly $3,500–$7,000. Every province requires a separate authorisation before a cremation can take place; the provider obtains it. How cremation works in Canada
- 1Pronouncement and registration
A medical professional confirms the death; the provider files the registration with the province (in Ontario, the Statement of Death; in Quebec, the declaration to the Directeur de l’état civil).
- 2Authorisation to cremate
Every province requires a separate authorisation before cremation — Ontario, for example, requires a coroner’s certificate. The provider obtains it; it usually adds a day or two.
- 3The cremation
Carried out at a licensed crematorium, which may belong to the funeral home or be a partner. You may be able to witness the start of the cremation if that matters to you — ask.
- 4Ashes returned
Usually within a few days, in a basic container unless you have chosen an urn. Keep them, inter them, or scatter them — scattering rules depend on the province and the landowner.

Questions people ask
- How much does cremation cost in Canada?
- Direct (simple) cremation typically costs $1,200–$3,000. Cremation with a visitation or memorial service runs about $3,500–$7,000. Local prices vary; ask for the itemized price list.
- What is direct cremation?
- Cremation with no ceremony: the provider collects the person, completes the registration and authorisation paperwork, carries out the cremation and returns the ashes. It is the lowest-cost option in every province. A memorial can be held separately, at any time.
- Is a permit needed before cremation in Canada?
- Yes, in every province. Beyond the death registration, a separate authorisation is required before a cremation can proceed — in Ontario, for example, a coroner’s certificate. The cremation provider or funeral home obtains it; it usually adds a day or two.
- Can a funeral home do the cremation?
- Most can — of the 198 funeral homes we list, the large majority offer cremation, either on site or through a partner crematorium. The 24 providers on this page are those listed as cremation specialists.
- What can we do with the ashes?
- Keep them, inter them in a cemetery plot or niche, or scatter them. Scattering rules are set by the province and by the landowner — cemeteries, parks and Crown land each have their own — so ask the provider, who will know the local rules.
