End-of-life services in Toronto
Toronto is one of Canada’s more expensive cities for end-of-life services — cemetery plots and interment in particular run well above the national average because of land costs. Direct cremation remains the most affordable route, and comparing itemized quotes from several providers can save thousands.

Frequently asked questions
Who regulates funeral homes in Toronto?
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) licenses and oversees every funeral home, cemetery, crematorium and funeral director in Ontario, including Toronto. You can check a provider’s licence on the BAO’s website.
Is there financial help for funeral costs in Toronto?
Yes. The federal CPP death benefit pays up to $5,000 to the estate ($2,500 basic, plus a $2,500 top-up for deaths on or after January 1, 2025 where the person never drew a CPP/QPP retirement or disability pension and leaves no spouse eligible for a survivor’s pension), and low-income residents may qualify for funeral and burial assistance through the City of Toronto / Ontario Works when there isn’t enough money in the estate.
